Jeremie Frimpong has been ruled out until after the international break with a hamstring injury, Liverpool manager Arne Slot has confirmed. The injury occurred during Liverpool’s Premier League match against Bournemouth. Slot also mentioned other players that can play in the right-back position like Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai.
Liverpool's promising right-back, Jeremie Frimpong, is set to be out of action until after the international break due to a hamstring injury, confirmed manager Arne Slot. The setback occurred during Liverpool's Premier League opener against Bournemouth, forcing Frimpong to be substituted in the 60th minute following consultation with the club's medical team. This injury creates a headache for Slot, who is already dealing with issues in the right-back position as both Conor Bradley and Joe Gomez have only recently returned from their own injury layoffs.
"The medical team were completely right about Jeremie [Frimpong] to tell me to take him off because he is out until the end of the international break and that happened during the game,” Slot stated, emphasizing the importance of heeding medical advice. "I think I got criticised for taking him off, didn’t I? It had nothing to do with how he played but we felt he had an issue with his hamstring and by we, I mean the medical staff.” He added that the decision to substitute Frimpong was purely precautionary, and the club anticipates his return after the international break.
Frimpong's absence is a significant blow to Liverpool, especially considering his impressive injury record during his time with Bayer Leverkusen. He missed only four Bundesliga games over the past three seasons, demonstrating remarkable consistency and durability. His pace, attacking prowess, and defensive solidity have made him a key figure in Liverpool's squad since joining the club.
Slot is now faced with the challenge of finding a suitable replacement for Frimpong in the upcoming matches. The manager hinted that Wataru Endo, who filled in at full-back briefly against Bournemouth, and Dominik Szoboszlai are potential options to feature in the Reds' backline against Newcastle. Their versatility could prove crucial in navigating this injury crisis.
"It was a good call to take him off. We expect to have him back after the international break,” Slot reassured fans. Addressing the other right-back options, he added, “Conor [Bradley] trained for a few minutes with us today [Friday] for the first time. Jeremie has a very positive injury record. Conor was out once or twice last season. These things happen. At the moment we only have two injuries but unfortunately, it is two in the same position. The good thing is we have other players that can play there. Wataru Endo played there. Dominik Szoboszlai.”
The situation with Joe Gomez is also being carefully managed. Gomez has recently returned from injury and is gradually being integrated back into the team. “Joe Gomez is definitely one of them but for him to already play 20 minutes – that is already quite a lot,” Slot explained. “I wouldn’t say he has had a set-back but he wasn’t able to train three days in a row completely with the team. This is completely normal when you have been out for so long.”
Liverpool fans will be hoping for a swift recovery for Frimpong, whose energetic displays have quickly made him a fan favorite. In the meantime, Slot will be relying on the depth and adaptability of his squad to ensure the team remains competitive in his absence. The upcoming matches will provide an opportunity for other players to step up and stake their claim for a regular spot in the starting eleven.
