In a stunning coup for newly promoted Sunderland, Granit Xhaka is set to join the Black Cats from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal reportedly worth €20 million (£17.3m). The transfer represents a significant investment and ambition from Sunderland, signaling their intent to establish themselves as a Premier League force.
According to TBR, Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has been instrumental in securing the Swiss international's signature, successfully pursuing the midfielder after learning of his availability. Xhaka himself has reportedly agreed to a lucrative three-year contract, foregoing any pay cut.
The deal was not without its initial hurdles. Journalist Graeme Bailey revealed to TBR that Sunderland initially faced skepticism, with the acquisition viewed as highly unlikely during preliminary discussions with owner Juan Sartori. However, persistent negotiations ultimately paved the way for this remarkable transfer.
Bailey highlighted the magnitude of this signing for Sunderland, stating, “Sunderland were never quite sure they could pull the Xhaka deal off...But as talks progressed, it became increasingly evident to the club that they could get him and they have now got it over the line. This really is a blockbuster move...getting Xhaka is massive – he is going to become the cornerstone of this Sunderland team.”
