Police probe spitting claim against Burnley’s Hannibal Mejbri

Burnley midfielder Hannibal Mejbri is facing simultaneous investigations by the Football Association (FA) and Lancashire Police following an allegation that he spat in the direction of Leeds United supporters during Saturday’s 2-0 Premier League victory at Turf Moor.

The alleged incident, which occurred in the second half, saw a complaint lodged by a travelling supporter against the 22-year-old on loan from Manchester United. The FA is currently reviewing the claims to determine if a formal charge of serious misconduct is warranted.

Spitting at an opponent carries a minimum six-match ban, a punishment that is expected to be applied if the player is found to have spat at a spectator.

A Lancashire Police spokesperson confirmed the probe: “Lancashire Police are aware of an alleged incident involving a Burnley player during the second half of the Premier League game between Burnley and Leeds United at Turf Moor.

We are currently working with Burnley Football Club to establish the facts.” Burnley has not yet commented on the ongoing situation.
