Rafael Benitez to become highest-paid manager in Greek footbal history

Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is set for his 17th managerial job with Panathinaikos, where he’ll reportedly become the highest-paid coach in Greek football history.

Rafael Benitez is on the verge of returning to management after 19 months away from the dugout, with reports confirming the Spaniard is set to take charge of Greek giants Panathinaikos on a two-year deal.

According to De Telegraaf and Daily Mail, the 65-year-old will earn around £3.47 million annually, making him the highest-paid manager in the Super League Greece. Negotiations with Panathinaikos president Giannis Alafouzos were finalised in London, with Benitez asking for a brief delay before officially taking over to prepare for the role.

Benitez’s last job was with Celta Vigo, where he managed just five wins in 28 matches before being sacked in March 2024. Despite speculation that he might retire, the Madrid-born tactician is ready to embark on what will be his 17th managerial role across clubs including Valencia, Napoli, Newcastle United, and Real Madrid.

The veteran coach famously guided Liverpool to their iconic 2005 Champions League triumph over AC Milan. His last silverware came in 2014, when his Napoli side lifted the Coppa Italia.

Panathinaikos currently sit seventh in the Greek Super League with nine points from six games, and Benitez will be tasked with reviving their domestic and European fortunes.
