Sheffield Wednesday have entered administration, receiving an immediate 12-point deduction from the EFL that plunges the Championship club to -6 points and ends Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.
Sheffield Wednesday have officially filed a notice to enter administration, following the revelation that His Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC) was preparing to issue a winding-up petition against the Championship club.
The notice was filed with the High Court this Friday morning, resulting in the immediate appointment of Julian Pitts, Kris Wigfield, and Paul Stanley of Begbies Traynor as joint-administrators. The filing will likely end Dejphon Chansiri’s decade-long ownership.
The administration immediately triggers an automatic 12-point deduction from the English Football League (EFL). Already bottom of the Championship table, the Owls will now face a 15-point deficit to safety.
Administrators have taken control to protect creditors and ensure the club continues operations while they seek a new owner. Joint administrator Kris Wigfield, speaking about the financial situation, stated:
“Like many football clubs, it has been trading at a significant loss for many years, with those losses historically funded by the owner. Mr Chansiri is no longer willing to provide that financial support.”
The news follows increased fan boycotts, which administrators noted increased financial pressure.
Paul Stanley confirmed that the fixture schedule should see “no interruption,” and urged supporters to return, as “Every penny spent will go directly to supporting the day-to-day running of this club, not to the former owner or professional costs.”
