Police officer makes history as Gibraltar club earns first European win

Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps made history with a 2-1 win over Lech Poznan in the Europa Conference League — their nation’s first-ever victory in European competition.

Gibraltar’s Lincoln Red Imps recorded a historic 2-1 victory over Polish side Lech Poznan in the Europa Conference League, marking the first-ever European win for a Gibraltarian club.

Though veteran forward and police officer Lee Casciaro, 44, did not feature in the game, he shared in the national pride. “I work for the Ministry of Defence of Gibraltar,” Casciaro told talkSPORT. “To tell you the truth, I’ve been a police officer for 22 years and I’ve arrested one person, I’m a good policeman.”

The win came as a major breakthrough for Lincoln, who have competed in European qualifiers since 2014. Reflecting on the match, Casciaro recalled the tense moments: “When the ref gave that penalty we were really disappointed… but in the 88th minute Christian [Rutjens] scored that header and it was euphoric for the players and all of Gibraltar.”

Casciaro, who debuted for Lincoln in 1998, remains a club legend with a record 60 titles and 27 years of service. “I just enjoy the moment and carry on playing as long as I can to help the team better themselves,” he said.

The victory has boosted Lincoln’s confidence as they continue to represent their small but passionate nation on Europe’s grand stage.
