Aston Villa secured an impressive 1-0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday, but the talking point quickly shifted to the controversial treatment and subsequent reaction of loanee Jadon Sancho.
The Manchester United winger was introduced early in the 29th minute, replacing the injured Emi Buendía for what was only his second Premier League appearance of the season.
However, in a rare and often humiliating move for a player, Sancho was withdrawn by manager Unai Emery in the 74th minute, having spent just 45 minutes on the pitch.
This ‘subbed on, subbed off’ scenario was quickly labeled an ’embarrassment’ across social media, exacerbated by the 25-year-old’s conduct upon leaving the field.
Sancho was visibly frustrated as he headed toward the bench, appearing to ignore the manager, who had rushed over to speak with him, and avoided an incoming teammate.
Fans were quick to criticize the reaction, with one commenting: “Sancho subbed off and giving Emery attitude. He’s his own worst enemy.” Another added: “Sancho’s body language when subbed….so so poor.
Emery’s moving towards him to embrace him and probably explain the reasoning but Sancho is clearly veering away to avoid him. Even when Emery holds his hand, Sancho’s dragging away. Awful behaviour.”
Despite the player’s clear displeasure, Emery robustly defended the decision, asserting that the move was purely tactical and fitness-based, not a punishment for performance.
The coach explained the change was necessary due to Sancho’s need for careful minutes management, having recently returned from illness and played 60 minutes in a midweek match.
The Spanish manager said: “It was not a punishment, it was a plan – he played 45 minutes.” He acknowledged the emotional impact on the player:
“Of course sometimes the players can feel embarrassed or even angry with me. But it was a tactical decision… He played a fantastic 45 minutes.”
