Former professional footballer Dani Alves has taken on a new role as an evangelical preacher, just months after his acquittal on sexual assault charges. The ex-Barcelona and Brazil defender was seen leading a service at the Elis Evangelical Church in Girona, Spain.
Alves, who was definitively acquitted on March 28, 2025, after 14 months in prison, spoke to the congregation about how his belief in God sustained him during his legal ordeal. Invited by Pastor Jimmy Martin, the footballer delivered a sermon where he credited his faith for his freedom.
“You have to have faith, my brothers, I am proof of that. Because here what God promises, is what God fulfils,” Alves told parishioners, in videos from the service that have circulated on social media.
He described making a “pact” with God while incarcerated and identified a divine messenger who helped him during his crisis. “In the midst of the turbulence, in the midst of the storm, there is always a messenger from God. And that messenger in the worst moment of my life, picked me up, led me through the Church to the path and today I am on the path thanks to them,” he asserted.
While Alves has long been known for his religious devotion, his public profile has recently become dominated by faith-based content, including Bible verses and religious books. His appearance as a preacher marks a significant new chapter following his acquittal and subsequent reconciliation with his partner, Joana Sanz.
