Football icon Lionel Messi has revealed his intention to be involved with Argentina’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, though his exact role on the team is yet to be determined.
Lionel Messi has expressed his strong desire to represent Argentina at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but stated that his final decision will depend entirely on his physical condition.
The Inter Miami star, who will turn 39 during the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, conveyed his hopes during a recent interview with NBC, according to reporting by FotMob.
This news comes as a boost to Argentine fans, especially since Messi had previously suggested that the 2022 triumph in Qatar would mark his final appearance at the global event.
His continued motivation to remain at the elite level is underscored by his recent three-year contract extension with his MLS club, which secures his presence in North America leading up to the competition.
Speaking candidly about the prospect of defending Argentina’s world title, Messi explained that the chance to return as world champion provides immense motivation.
“I’m really eager because it’s a World Cup,” Messi stated. “We’re coming off winning the last World Cup, and being able to defend it on the field again is spectacular because it’s always a dream to play with the national team, especially in official competitions, so hopefully God will allow me to do it once again.”
However, the forward emphasised that the commitment is conditional on his physical state. He confirmed he plans to assess his fitness daily, beginning with Inter Miami’s next preseason, to ensure he is capable of performing at 100% for the national team.
“The truth is that yes, it’s something extraordinary to be able to be in a World Cup,” Messi confessed. “And I would like to be there. To feel well and to be an important part of helping my national team, if I am there.”
