Dortmund edge Frankfurt on penalties to reach German Cup third round

Borussia Dortmund defeated Eintracht Frankfurt 4-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to advance to the German Cup third round.

Borussia Dortmund booked their place in the third round of the German Cup after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout victory over Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday.

Frankfurt went ahead in the seventh minute when Mario Goetze set up Ansgar Knauff to score against his former club. Dortmund equalised three minutes after halftime as Julian Brandt tapped in from close range following Julian Ryerson’s low cross.

The hosts thought they had won it late in extra time when Jonathan Burkardt found the net in the 115th minute, but the goal was ruled out for offside.

In the shootout, Dortmund were flawless with Fabio Silva, Niklas Suele, Carney Chukwuemeka and Felix Nmecha all converting. Frankfurt’s Ritsu Doan and Fares Chaibi missed their spot kicks, while Gregor Kobel’s save sealed the win.

The game was a rematch of the 2017 final, which Dortmund also won. Elsewhere, Hertha Berlin beat Elversberg 3-0, Hamburg edged Heidenheim 1-0, and Holstein Kiel upset Wolfsburg
