Sunderland AFC has made a significant addition to their squad, securing the services of experienced midfielder Granit Xhaka from Bayer Leverkusen. The transfer is reported to be in the region of £17.3 million (€20 million). Xhaka, a seasoned Premier League campaigner, brings a wealth of leadership and experience to the newly-promoted Black Cats. He has inked a three-year deal with the club.
The 32-year-old Swiss international previously captained Arsenal, where he established himself as a formidable presence in the midfield. His move to Bayer Leverkusen in 2023 saw him play a pivotal role in the team's success under manager Xabi Alonso. During the 2023-24 season, Leverkusen enjoyed an unbeaten run domestically, clinching both the Bundesliga title and the DFB-Pokal.
Reports indicate that Sunderland paid an initial fee of approximately £13 million for Xhaka, with potential add-ons reaching £4.3 million. Xhaka's arrival marks the fourth midfield signing for Sunderland this window, as he joins Enzo Le Fee, Habib Diarra, and Noah Sadiki.
Upon his arrival, Xhaka conveyed his enthusiasm, stating, "I'm very proud to be here. When I spoke to the club, I was excited, and I felt the energy and the mentality that all the people and players have...It's exactly what I wanted, and I have a very good feeling." He added, "We are back to where this club needs to be, and we want to stay here to write our own history. I feel that I'm ready to help the team with my experience, but with quality as well."
Sunderland is set to kick off their Premier League campaign against West Ham at the Stadium of Light on August 16. Xhaka might debut in a friendly match against Real Betis on Saturday.
