Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Erling Haaland after the striker netted a decisive brace in the team’s commanding 3-1 victory over AFC Bournemouth on Sunday, quickly dispelling doubts about his fitness.
The result, which propelled the reigning champions into second place in the Premier League table, came just days after Guardiola had been terse about Haaland’s readiness following a knock sustained against Aston Villa.
The Catalan boss had previously set alarm bells ringing when asked about the Norwegian’s status for the match, saying tersely:
“I don’t know yet. I hope so.” However, just before the weekend clash, Guardiola had simply confirmed the striker was “ready” to face the Cherries.
Haaland’s performance, which delivered his 97th and 98th career Premier League goals, underscored a mentality the manager has often gushed about.
While the manager did not immediately offer lengthy new quotes post-match, his existing praise for the striker’s ability to cope with defensive attention took on new meaning.
Guardiola has previously stated: “With Erling, he knows perfectly how to be patient, how to be in small spaces, how to be consistent, to go to the ones in behind.” This dedication was evident as Haaland notched his goals.
The manager also welcomed the return of influential midfielder Rodri, who was introduced from the bench following a hamstring injury. Prior to the game, Guardiola said of the Spaniard:
“I think he will be ready to help us. I don’t know from the beginning but hopefully he can be with us.” With key players back and firing, the win sends a strong signal about City’s renewed title aspirations heading into the busy winter schedule.
