Barcelona is eyeing Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard for a 2026 transfer, but Arsenal is determined to retain their crucial midfielder, planning a new contract to ward off interest.
Spanish giants FC Barcelona are reportedly plotting an audacious transfer move for Arsenal captain and Norwegian international Martin Ødegaard, according to recent reporting.
The Catalan club is believed to have added the 26-year-old playmaker to their transfer shortlist as they look to reinforce their midfield options, with a potential swoop being planned for the summer of 2026.
The rumour gains traction despite Ødegaard’s status as a foundational player and club captain at the Emirates, and his current contract running until the middle of 2028.
Barcelona manager Hansi Flick is understood to be a strong admirer of the former Real Madrid prospect, who has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most influential creators since his permanent move to North London in 2021.
With an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) placed around €80 million (£70 million), any deal would represent a significant investment for a Barcelona side still navigating financial restraints.
Reports suggest that the player himself may be open to a “major career change,” setting the stage for a dramatic summer saga.
However, sources close to the Gunners quickly rebuffed the idea that Arsenal would easily sanction the departure of their leader. Analyst Dean Jones has ruled out the immediate prospect of a deal, stating: “I can not see Arsenal entertaining an offer for Odegaard.
Part of that is that if Barcelona are the ones to test the water, how much are they putting on the table to make it tempting? I know Barcelona still have a magic touch, but we can not pretend they have the financial power to push Arsenal into a sale of one of their most important players.
Arsenal are one of the most powerful clubs in the transfer market and you don’t just take players away against their will.”
Ødegaard has made over 200 appearances for Arsenal, registering 41 goals and 40 assists, and remains central to Mikel Arteta’s long-term project.
While the transfer is viewed as a long shot, the reported interest signals Barcelona’s intent to pursue world-class talent and could force the North London club to defend their captain against future bids.
