FIFA taps South African referees for Nigeria vs Gabon playoff, sparks outrage

FIFA has appointed a South African refereeing crew for Nigeria’s Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff against Gabon, with Tom Abongile set to oversee the first leg in Rabat.

According to VANGUARD reporting, FIFA has appointed an all-South African refereeing crew for the Nigerian Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup playoff first leg against Gabon, a decision that has sparked strong protests from Nigerian football officials and fans.

The November 3 letter from FIFA names Tom Abongile to oversee the match in Rabat on November 13 at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium. He will be assisted by fellow South Africans Zakhele Siwela and Akhona Makalima, who will also manage VAR duties. The referee assessor is set to come from Benin Republic.

The appointment has triggered intense criticism from Nigeria. A senior NFF official, speaking to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, said the federation was “baffled” by FIFA’s choice, citing tense football relations between the countries.

“How can FIFA appoint a South African referee after their sports minister openly said he wished Nigeria would not qualify for the World Cup? South Africa are clearly hostile to us,” the official stated.

The Super Eagles secured their place in the playoff round after Frank Onyeka’s late winner against Benin Republic in October. The winner of the Nigeria vs. Gabon fixture will advance to meet either DR Congo or Cameroon in the final playoff.

Social media also saw a wave of criticism. X user @pamelamodella wrote, “A South African referee shouldn’t be officiating a Nigerian game for Christ sake especially when the games are very crucial. Pls the NFF has to do something about it.” Despite the reaction, South African officials are known to be among the continent’s most experienced, often handling CAF Champions League and Africa Cup of Nations matches.
