September 4, 2025
Trai Hume attributes his Northern Ireland international experience to his successful adaptation to the Premier League with Sunderland. Hume, who joined Sunderland from Linfield in 2022, is set to captain Northern Ireland in their World Cup qualifiers. He believes the exposure to top-level international football has prepared him for the demands of the Premier League, where he has featured in all of Sunderland’s matches this season. Hume also recently signed a contract extension with Sunderland, expressing his commitment to the club and his pride in their journey from League One to the Premier League.
Sunderland defender Trai Hume credits his international experience with Northern Ireland for smoothing his transition to the rigors of the Premier League. The 23-year-old, who is set to captain his country in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Luxembourg and Germany, believes the exposure to top-tier football on the international stage has been invaluable in his development.
Hume's journey to the Premier League began in January 2022 when he joined Sunderland from Linfield, a prominent club in the Irish Premiership. At the time, Sunderland were striving to escape League One, the third tier of English football. Hume quickly became an integral part of the team, contributing to their successful promotion campaign and subsequent return to the Championship. His impressive performances didn't go unnoticed, and just two months after arriving in England, he received his first call-up to the Northern Ireland national team.
"It probably has helped me in a way to get used to the top players, that top level and how concentrated you have to be in the game for the whole 90 minutes," Hume stated, reflecting on the impact of his international career. He has featured in all three of Sunderland's Premier League matches this season, showcasing his ability to compete at the highest level.
"I've always said I wanted to test myself at the highest level so getting the chance to do that this season is a dream come true. Hopefully I'll just keep playing games and keep being able to do that."

Hume recently signed a contract extension with Sunderland, solidifying his commitment to the club. Despite interest from other clubs in England and across Europe, Hume emphasized that remaining at Sunderland was always his priority. "Ever since I signed for the club in League One I've loved every second of it," he said.
He expressed immense pride in contributing to Sunderland's resurgence, from their time in League One to their current status in the Premier League. "It does feel that wee bit better that you've helped Sunderland from where they were in League One, the whole way up to where we belong," Hume added.
Looking ahead, Hume is eager to contribute to Northern Ireland's World Cup qualifying campaign. The team faces Luxembourg and Germany in their upcoming matches, and Hume is honored to lead his nation as captain. "I'm really proud and happy to do it, but I've always said that when I wear the armband it doesn't really change much for me," he stated. "I'll obviously try my best to do the job at hand and help my team-mates."
Hume recognizes the challenges that lie ahead, particularly in their match against Luxembourg, a team they have faced recently in the Nations League. Despite being the lowest-ranked side in Group A, Hume is wary of their capabilities. "We've played them twice very recently in the Nations League and we know it won't be an easy game. We drew 2-2 in our last game here, so it's one we are fully focused on and prepared for."
Trai Hume's story is a testament to hard work, dedication, and the invaluable experience gained from playing international football. As he continues to excel in the Premier League and lead his nation on the world stage, Hume is undoubtedly a rising star with a bright future ahead.
