Tottenham midfielder Lucas Bergvall is nearing a return to full training following the concussion he sustained ten days ago during Spurs’ Premier League loss to Chelsea, according to a report from The Standard.
The injury initially saw the teenager plead unsuccessfully with Tottenham’s medical staff to let him back onto the pitch, but head coach Thomas Frank made the final decision to replace him.
Concussion protocols subsequently ruled Bergvall out of matches against FC Copenhagen and Manchester United.
Now, having been called up to his first Sweden squad by new boss Graham Potter, Bergvall is participating in team training under restrictions.
Potter provided an update on the midfielder’s recovery, confirming his immediate status ahead of Sweden’s matches against Switzerland and Slovenia.
“He will train with the team [on Tuesday], but there will be no heading for him,” Potter said. “He is not here yet and I will talk to him and the doctors, but as I understand it he will be able to be there.”
Potter suggested the full lifting of restrictions is imminent. Asked when Bergvall would be ready for unrestricted training, Potter estimated: “Around Thursday, I would think…
But like I said, I’ll probably get in trouble if I don’t double-check with the doctors first. The most important thing for Lucas is that they give the go-ahead. But as I understand it, it will be at the end of the week.”
Should the 19-year-old complete the two Sweden matches without any further issues, he is expected to be available for selection when Tottenham hosts Arsenal in the crucial north London derby on November 23.
