Garber announces historic MLS calendar shift from 2027

Major League Soccer will align its calendar with major European leagues from the 2027-28 season, a move hailed by commissioner Don Garber as a historic decision for the competition.

Major League Soccer (MLS) is set to adopt a new summer-spring calendar format starting in the 2027-28 season, aligning its schedule with top global leagues in what is being called a historic move, according to a report from FotMob.

MLS has announced a radical shift in its competition structure, confirming plans to adopt a European-style, summer-spring schedule from the 2027-28 season, marking one of the biggest changes in the league’s 30-year history.

The decision follows a two-year review process aimed at strengthening the league’s global standing and competitive opportunities.

Under the current format, the MLS season operates from February to December, with the playoffs beginning in October.

The new structure will see the regular season begin in July and conclude with the MLS Cup playoffs in late May.

Furthermore, the league will take a mid-winter break from mid-December to early February, with no league matches scheduled in January.

MLS Commissioner Don Garber strongly endorsed the move, claiming it is foundational for the league’s future. “The calendar shift is one of the most important decisions in our history,” Garber said.

“Aligning our schedule with the world’s top leagues will strengthen our clubs’ global competitiveness, create better opportunities in the transfer market, and ensure our Audi MLS Cup Playoffs take centre stage without interruption.”

He concluded: “It marks the start of a new era for our league and for soccer in North America.”

The primary alteration is being made to align with the FIFA calendar, which will help avoid clashes with international breaks and major international tournaments. This alignment was praised by United States boss Mauricio Pochettino, who stated:

“This is a great step forward for MLS to be on par with the top leagues in the world. The ability to align with the international calendar will have a huge positive impact for the players, coaches and clubs.”

In addition to the calendar change, the league will transition to a single-table competition, ending the current split between the Eastern and Western Conferences.

A transition season is scheduled for February to May 2027, featuring a 14-game regular season, playoffs, and an MLS Cup to determine qualification for cup competitions.
