Dublin Airport’s official X account savagely mocked Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai after Hungary was dramatically knocked out of World Cup contention by Ireland.
According to a report from Empire of the Kop, Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai is facing fresh humiliation from across the Irish Sea after Hungary’s dramatic failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in North America.
The 25-year-old Hungary captain was left heartbroken after his nation, needing only a draw at home to Republic of Ireland on Sunday to clinch a play-off berth, lost 3-5 to Troy Parrott’s 96th-minute winner.
Shortly after Ireland’s heroics, which kept their hopes alive for a first World Cup appearance since 2002, Dublin Airport changed its name on X to Troy Parrott International Airport. They followed this by aiming an unsubtle dig at Szoboszlai in a post on Monday evening.
Posting a photo of signage for the U.S. pre-clearance facility, with an image of the Liverpool midfielder in tears pasted over it, the airport added the brutal caption: ‘U.S pre-clearance. Some have it, some don’t.’
The post was one of several instances of mockery directed at the midfielder, coming after candid footage showed Irish pundit Kevin Doyle shouting a derogatory term at the player as he celebrated the stoppage-time winner.
The report notes that an outstanding save from Szoboszlai’s ex-Anfield teammate Caoimhin Kelleher had earlier denied him a match-deciding late goal.
Szoboszlai and LFC teammate Milos Kerkez now need to swiftly put the World Cup disappointment behind them and focus on reviving their club’s fortunes.
