Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim is reportedly looking to bring club icons like Eric Cantona back to Old Trafford to mentor the team’s younger players.
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is reportedly looking to tap into the club’s successful history by bringing legendary figures back to Old Trafford to aid the current squad, particularly the younger players.
According to a report from The Mirror, the Portuguese boss, who recently marked his first year in charge, wants to utilize the knowledge and experience of icons like Eric Cantona, who is credited as the key signing that spearheaded the club’s success in the early 1990s.
Amorim also wishes to make use of the “IQ” held by 1999 treble-winning heroes, including David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Teddy Sheringham, Andy Cole, and Dwight Yorke.
Amorim is said to hold “a deep admiration and appreciation” for the club’s legendary figures and believes they can aid the development of young players such as Benjamin Sesko, the club’s most expensive summer signing who has endured a mixed start, and academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo, who is currently struggling for Premier League minutes.
An insider told The Sun that Amorim “always loved when former players and legends of the clubs he played for would interact with the team – sharing knowledge, stories, and advice about what it means to represent the club.”
The source added that “Ruben loves Cantona. He sees him as the embodiment of the spirit and aura of Manchester United,” and wants that heritage to be felt by everyone in the squad.
