Football legend Lothar Matthäus suggests Arsenal can exploit Bayern Munich’s weakness defending set pieces in their upcoming Champions League clash, predicting a tight 2-2 draw.
According to a report from Just Arsenal News, Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthäus has identified a specific vulnerability in the Bundesliga giants that Arsenal are well-placed to exploit in their hotly anticipated Champions League fixture today.
While Bayern is acknowledged as one of Europe’s most in-form sides, having recently produced a “notable victory over PSG,” Matthäus pointed to their defense against dead-ball situations as a key area of concern for coach Vincent Kompany’s team.
Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, Matthäus conceded that despite the team being “well-drilled and confident in its strengths,” there is a clear failing that their English opponents can leverage. He stated:
“The only weakness, which they already showed last season against Inter Milan, is conceding goals from set pieces. In the Bundesliga, the team has conceded four goals from set pieces recently.
That’s something coach Vincent Kompany will be working on, especially since Arsenal are very dangerous on set pieces.”
The report emphasizes that Arsenal has been “particularly effective from set pieces this season,” suggesting they can capitalize on Bayern’s historical frailties.
Matthäus further stressed the need for Bayern’s “physically large and experienced players” to “approach the game with even more focus” to counteract this threat.
Forecasting a tightly balanced encounter, Matthäus concluded his assessment of the tie with a specific prediction:
“I expect a very close match and predict a 2-2 draw.” Both sides will need to perform at their highest level, with the margin for error expected to be minimal.
