Arrests made after disorder halts Villa vs Young Boys match

Two away fans were arrested for affray and assaulting an officer after disorder, including objects thrown at Donyell Malen, temporarily halted Aston Villa’s Europa League match against BSC Young Boys.

Disorder in the away end led to two arrests and the temporary halting of the Europa League football match between Aston Villa and BSC Young Boys, according to a report from West Midlands Police.

The trouble, which broke out in the lower tier of the Doug Ellis Stand during the first half, saw seats broken and coins thrown by away fans at Villa Park in Birmingham.

Amid the disorder, police officers were assaulted, and Villa player Donyell Malen was hit on the head by a plastic cup thrown while he was celebrating his 27th-minute opener.

The police confirmed that two away fans have been arrested on suspicion of affray and assaulting a police officer. Aston Villa ultimately won the tie 2-1.

Supt Paul Minor of West Midlands Police condemned the incident, stating that violence of any kind would not be tolerated.

Minor said: “The majority of the crowd was in good spirits but unfortunately a small minority of away fans caused violence and disrupted the game.

An investigation has been launched, and officers are reviewing body worn video and CCTV from the stadium of the disorder.”

The police confirmed they are continuing to investigate the violence caused by the “small minority of away fans.”
