Uli Hoeneß mocks Liverpool, pities Wirtz.

Uli Hoeneß criticizes Liverpool’s expensive, star-filled squad for their poor season, suggesting it’s why Florian Wirtz would struggle to get playing time.

According to a report from BavarianFootballWorks, Uli Hoeneß — honorary president of Bayern Munich — has launched a scathing assessment of Liverpool’s 2025 campaign, pointing to their heavy spending and poor outcomes.

Hoeneß lamented that Liverpool “spent €500 million and are having a disastrous season.”

He argued the problem lies in the club’s squad makeup: “They only have superstars. They only have ‘chiefs’ and no ‘workers’.”

In a biting swipe at the club’s star-driven structure, he quipped that “Liverpool will soon have to play with five balls because the stars won’t let go of the ball.”

Hoeneß reserved particular sympathy for Wirtz — a high-profile signing from Bayer Leverkusen — suggesting the 22-year-old is being marginalized.

“Poor Florian Wirtz, he doesn’t even get a ball because [Mohamed] Salah and [Dominik] Szoboszlai … want to play with their own,” he said.

The former Bayern executive contrasted this with the trajectory of another player, Luis Díaz, whom Bayern signed instead — a move now framed as vindicated by Díaz’s apparent fit at his new club.

Hoeneß’s critique underscores a broader concern: that financial muscle alone does not guarantee cohesion or success — especially when big-name talents prioritize personal spotlight over team balance.
