Fabrizio Romano confirms transfer interest in Barcelona’s Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, who returns to training but is reportedly outside Hansi Flick’s plans, creating a crucial exit opportunity for the club’s finances and the goalkeeper’s 2026 World Cup aspirations.
Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen is attracting significant transfer interest as the club actively seeks to offload the German international during the upcoming January window.
According to a report from Football Espana, citing Fabrizio Romano, Ter Stegen, who underwent back surgery during the summer, has “joined his Barcelona teammates in training on Monday,” signaling he is nearing a return to action.
However, the 33-year-old “does not feature in Hansi Flick’s plans for the remainder of the season,” making him a prime candidate for a winter departure from the Spotify Camp Nou.
Romano confirmed that Ter Stegen “is attracting interest from a number of clubs ahead of the winter transfer window.” Though Turkish side Besiktas were recently linked, they are said to have “already ended their pursuit.”
Barcelona is highly motivated to facilitate a move, as they “want to save his salary (or at least a fair portion of it)”—Ter Stegen is reportedly “one of the club’s highest earner”—which would significantly aid their “well-documented financial problems.”
Furthermore, with the 2026 World Cup approaching, Ter Stegen will need to leave Barcelona in order to “guarantee himself as Germany’s starting goalkeeper for the tournament.”
While he has previously had “reservations about a move,” recent reports suggest he is “becoming increasing open to the idea of joining another club for the second half of the season.” However, as of right now, “it is far from guaranteed that an exit is struck.”
