Emmanuel Petit, has said he does not expect Barcelona to win the Champions League this season.
Former France midfielder Emmanuel Petit has written off Barcelona’s chances of winning the Champions League this season, citing their porous defence as the major roadblock.
According to a report from Daily Post Nigeria, Petit believes that while the Spanish champions are capable of competing domestically in LaLiga, their defensive frailties make a European triumph “impossible.”
He was quoted expressing strong doubts about their prospects, stating: “Barça can compete for LaLiga, but no for the Champions League, no way. Does anyone think they can win that title with that defence? Impossible.”
Petit referenced the club’s elimination last season, where they fell to Inter Milan in the semi-final on a 7-6 aggregate scoreline.
He added: “We saw it against Inter. How can you concede seven goals in a Champions League semi finals? Some may say they scored six goals, but that’s not enough for me.”
Barcelona’s early form in the current European competition shows they have won two games, drawn two, and lost one.
This record leaves them in 18th place on the log, but they maintain a mathematical chance of qualifying for the knockout playoffs despite Petit’s sharp criticism of their ability to progress deep into the tournament.
