A new FIFA rule implementing mandatory three-minute “hydration breaks” in all 2026 World Cup matches, effectively creating four quarters, has been met with negative fan reactions who view it as a weak excuse to air more commercials.
According to a report from BroBible, FIFA announced a three-minute “hydration break” during each half of the 2026 World Cup, pausing play at the 22-minute mark and effectively creating four quarters.
The governing body claims the rule is meant to “prioritise player welfare,” given expected high temperatures in host cities for the US, Mexico, and Canada tournament.
However, the fact that the breaks will occur in every game, regardless of weather conditions, led to negative fan reaction.
Critics believe the universal rule is an excuse for television rights holders to air more commercials, with one user posting, “Purely for adverts.”
Another post noted, “FIFA says it’s about player safety, but broadcasters will also be able to air more mid-game commercials.”
