Fabian Schar suspended for Carabao Cup Semi-final first leg against Manchester City

Fabian Schär will miss Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester City due to a one-match suspension for yellow card accumulation.

Newcastle United will be without key defender Fabian Schär for the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester City.

The Swiss international earned a one-match suspension following a tactical foul on Fulham’s Raul Jimenez during the Magpies’ 2-1 quarter-final victory at St James’ Park.

Under competition rules, receiving two yellow cards before the semi-final stage triggers an automatic ban for the subsequent cup fixture.

The timing of the suspension presents a significant tactical headache for head coach Eddie Howe. Schär is currently one of only two fit senior center-backs available to the squad, alongside Malick Thiaw.

The Magpies’ defensive ranks are already severely depleted by injuries to Sven Botman, Dan Burn, and Jamaal Lascelles, leaving the team with limited experienced options to face the reigning Premier League champions in the upcoming two-legged tie.

Reflecting on the mounting injury list following the Fulham win, Howe admitted the loss of further personnel was a “big worry” for his side.

While the club remains hopeful that players like Kieran Trippier and Emil Krafth may return in early 2026, Schär’s absence ensures a makeshift backline for the January 13/14 fixture.

Unlike red cards, this yellow card accumulation ban applies exclusively to the Carabao Cup and will not affect league availability.
