Newcastle: Joelinton nursing groin injury amidst deepening injury crisis

Eddie Howe confirmed that Joelinton is being limited by a groin injury and was only considered for emergency duty during Newcastle’s recent win over Fulham.

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe has offered clarity regarding the fitness of Joelinton following the club’s Carabao Cup victory over Fulham.

The Brazilian midfielder, who missed the recent Wear-Tyne derby, was named only as a substitute for the quarter-final clash at St James’ Park.

Howe revealed that the player is currently managing a persistent groin problem, which necessitated a cautious approach to his involvement in the match.

The Magpies’ boss explained that Joelinton’s presence on the bench was primarily a contingency plan rather than a return to full availability.

Describing the midfielder’s status, Howe stated: “Joelinton is nursing a groin problem. He’s fit to a point, but it would only be in an emergency situation.”

He further noted that while the player is training, he is not yet “executing everything normally,” leading to the decision to preserve his fitness.

In addition to the midfield update, Howe addressed the situation regarding young striker Will Osula, who has seen limited action despite the team’s injury woes.

While fans have called for the summer signing to receive more opportunities, Howe emphasized the need for tactical balance during a high-stakes period.

The manager remains focused on navigating a dense fixture list as he waits for several key senior players to return from the treatment room.
