Jamie Carragher has defended his blunt assessment of West Ham’s poor form, dismissing claims of bias by questioning the club’s supposed “transition” period following their latest defeat.
Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has hit back at accusations that he is overly critical of West Ham United following their recent 3-2 defeat to Aston Villa.
After being challenged on his “shocking” assessment of the club’s current trajectory, Carragher doubled down on his stance, questioning the team’s lack of progress under Nuno Espírito Santo.
The former Liverpool defender stood by his comments, suggesting that supporters and pundits alike are right to demand more given the club’s significant investment.
The exchange began after West Ham’s latest setback at the London Stadium, where they surrendered a lead to lose against Unai Emery’s side.
When presented with the idea that the Hammers are simply in a transition phase, Carragher retorted with a blunt, “Are they?”
He argued that the team has been underperforming for a prolonged period, dating back to the latter stages of David Moyes’ tenure, and that the “new manager bounce” has failed to materialize.
Carragher emphasized that his criticism is not based on bias but on the objective reality of West Ham’s recent results at home.
He noted that the club has struggled for consistency throughout the calendar year, leading to increased frustration among the fanbase.
“They know exactly what is going on at this football club,” Carragher said, adding that when supporters turn against ownership or management, it is usually a justified “last resort” reflecting deeper issues within the institution.
