AFCON 2025: Egypt and Mo Salah fined over media breach

Egypt’s national team was fined $5,000 by CAF for skipping mandatory media interviews following their opening win against Zimbabwe at AFCON 2025.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has issued a $5,000 fine and a “strong warning” to Egypt following their 2-1 victory over Zimbabwe.

Despite a late winner from Mohamed Salah, the Egyptian delegation sparked controversy by bypassing the mandatory mixed-zone media duties.

CAF officials labeled the incident a clear violation of tournament obligations, designed to ensure transparency and fan engagement throughout the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The sanction followed a tense Group B opener where Egypt recovered from a 1-0 deficit. After Omar Marmoush equalized, Salah secured the points in stoppage time.

Reflecting on the narrow escape, manager Hossam Hassan remarked, “We were unlucky in this game. We wasted many chances and made it harder than it should have been.

I warned the players about this scenario, and we have to learn the lesson.”

Egypt now faces South Africa on Friday under the threat of heavier penalties if they repeat the media snub.

Despite the off-field disciplinary issues, Hassan remains focused on the team’s pursuit of an eighth continental title.

He emphasized the squad’s ambition, stating, “There are no easy matches in this tournament. We want to compete for the title. Egypt is a big nation in Africa and has the right to fight for the trophy.”
