Liverpool will honor the memory of the late Diogo Jota during their match against Wolves, featuring his sons as mascots and a formal retirement of his No. 20 jersey.
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has called for a show of unity as the club prepares to honor the late Diogo Jota during Saturday’s Premier League match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
This fixture marks the first meeting between Jota’s two former English clubs since his tragic death in a car accident last July.
In a poignant tribute, Jota’s sons, Dinis and Duarte, will serve as mascots, accompanied by their mother, Rute.
In his pre-match programme notes, Slot expressed his hope that the “love and affection” from fans would provide solace to Jota’s family during their first Christmas without him.
Reflecting on the tragedy, Slot wrote: “Reflecting on everything that has happened over the last 12 months ignites a rollercoaster of emotions but it is normal at this time of year to look back to everything that has happened.”
The match against bottom-of-the-table Wolves is expected to be a highly emotional affair for both sets of supporters.
Jota, who was instrumental in Liverpool’s recent title success, has been further honored by the club’s decision to retire his No. 20 jersey.
Regarding the upcoming game, Slot added: “The sense of loss will be particularly strong on Saturday, of course, as it will be the first time that Diogo’s two English teams will meet.”
