A communication breakdown led to a bizarre own goal as Bafodé Diakité’s clearance deflected off teammate Djordje Petrovic to give Brentford a two-goal cushion.
Brentford doubled their advantage against Bournemouth in sensational fashion on Saturday following a defensive catastrophe in the 39th minute.
The sequence began when Igor Thiago broke down the right flank and fired a shot from a narrow angle.
While Bournemouth goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic successfully blocked the initial strike, the ball spiraled high into the air, crossing the face of the goal and triggering a frantic scramble between the visiting defenders.
The situation turned into what observers described as a “comedy own goal” when Bournemouth defender Bafodé Diakité attempted to clear the danger.
Instead of finding safety, Diakité’s powerful clearance struck his own goalkeeper, Petrovic, at point-blank range.
The ball ricocheted off the keeper and directly into the back of the net, leaving the visitors trailing 2-0 as a result of the unfortunate and highly unusual technical error.
