Nigeria and Algeria named as CAF launches multi-nation misconduct probe after AFCON chaos QFs

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has opened a formal investigation into alleged misconduct involving players and officials during the AFCON 2025 quarter-final matches between Cameroon and Morocco, as well as Algeria and Nigeria.

Following Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in Marrakech, the pitch descended into chaos as Algerian players confronted match officials, while stadium security was forced to intervene during an attempted pitch invasion by fans.

CAF confirmed it has referred match reports and video evidence to the Disciplinary Board for review, stating that it has “called for appropriate action to be taken if the identified persons are found guilty of any wrongdoing.”

Parallel to the violence on the pitch, the Algerian Football Federation has filed a formal grievance regarding the officiating of Senegalese referee Issa Sy, specifically citing a denied first-half penalty.

Similar tensions arose during Morocco’s 2-0 win over Cameroon, where the Indomitable Lions expressed outrage over two unawarded penalties.

Beyond the conduct of the teams, CAF is also reviewing footage of media members who allegedly misbehaved in the mixed zone.

Emphasizing its stance on tournament integrity, the governing body declared, “CAF strongly condemns any inappropriate behaviour which occurs during matches, especially those targeting the refereeing team or match organisers.”
