Manchester City suffered one of the most humiliating nights in their European history, crashing to a 3-1 defeat against Bodo/Glimt in Norway.
Fresh off a derby loss to Manchester United, Pep Guardiola’s side collapsed in the Arctic Circle as the Norwegian minnows clinical counter-attacking exposed a fragile City defense.
The visitors’ night went from bad to worse when captain Rodri was sent off for two rapid-fire yellow cards shortly after Rayan Cherki had offered a glimmer of hope. Here is how the players fared on a night to forget in the Champions League.
Gianluigi Donnarumma – 3
While he wasn’t solely responsible for the collapse, shipping three goals is never a good look. He did manage one sharp reflex save when the score was 3-0 to prevent an even more historic scoreline, but he was beaten far too easily for the opening goals.
Rayan Ait-Nouri – 4
Experimentally deployed at right-back, the natural left-footer looked comfortable when venturing forward into the final third. However, his defensive positioning was highly suspect, often leaving his fellow defenders exposed during Bodo’s lightning-fast transitions.
Max Alleyne – 2
A night the youngster will want to erase from his memory. After showing promise in recent weeks, he was brutally exposed here. His catastrophic individual error led directly to Bodo’s second goal, effectively killing City’s early momentum and confidence.
Abdukodir Khusanov – 3
The defender looked sluggish and failed to track the runs of Kasper Hogh. He lacked the necessary urgency to extinguish danger inside the penalty area, often standing static while the Norwegian attackers found space around him.
Nico O’Reilly – 5
One of the very few bright spots in a dismal performance. His technical quality was evident with some fine footwork that set up scoring chances for teammates. His work rate remained high even as the team around him began to crumble.
Rodri – 1
An absolute disaster for the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner. Usually the heartbeat of the team, he looked a shadow of himself, looking heavy-legged and erratic. His evening culminated in a “brainless” dismissal, picking up two yellow cards in under 60 seconds to abandon his team when they needed a leader most.
Rico Lewis – 3
He started with his typical energy, drifting into midfield to help control possession. However, as Bodo/Glimt intensified their physical press, Lewis faded into the background and failed to provide any creative spark or defensive cover.
Tijjani Reijnders – 4
The midfielder was a willing runner and tried to make things happen, but his teammates often ignored his runs. When he did get the ball in scoring positions, he lacked the clinical edge required to test the Bodo goalkeeper.
Rayan Cherki – 6
Easily the standout performer for the Sky Blues. He was the only player who looked capable of hurting the opposition, capped off by a well-taken goal from the edge of the box. He can leave Norway with his head held relatively high.
Phil Foden – 2
A surprisingly anonymous performance from a player of his caliber. Foden struggled to influence the game in any meaningful way and was largely a passenger before being replaced by Omar Marmoush late in the second half.
Erling Haaland – 2
On his highly anticipated homecoming to Norway, the striker was completely frozen out. He missed two significant chances he would usually bury and was largely invisible for the remainder of the contest, failing to register a single shot on target.
