Farai Hallam becomes third Black referee in Premier League history

Farai Hallam made history this weekend by becoming only the third Black official to referee a Premier League match, following in the footsteps of Uriah Rennie in 2008 and Sam Allison in 2024.

His landmark debut coincided with a significant milestone for English football, as the current match round featured a Black Referee, a Black Assistant Referee, and a Black Fourth Official across various fixtures—a moment advocates describe as “what progress looks like when talent is backed and pathways are real.”

This achievement highlights the ongoing impact of diversity initiatives such as the Elite Referee Development Plan and the work of BAMREF, serving as “a testament to their hard work and skill” in diversifying the officiating landscape at the highest level of the game.
