Eddie Howe insisted that Joelinton’s frustrated reaction to being substituted against Qarabag was merely a reflection of his competitive passion and confirmed the move was to protect his health.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe dismissed concerns over a heated exchange with Joelinton during their 3-2 victory against Qarabag.
The Brazilian midfielder appeared furious when substituted in the 54th minute, gesturing toward the stadium clock as he sought more playing time following a groin injury.
However, Howe clarified that the decision was purely precautionary to manage the player’s long-term fitness and robustness.
Defending his star, Howe praised the midfielder’s intensity despite the brief touchline tension.
He told Chronicle Live: “Joey always plays with that passion. I think that’s what makes him the player that he is, you know, from my side, I’m trying to protect him and make sure we’re able to use him in the next game.”
The Magpies progressed with a 9-3 aggregate score.
