FIFA President Gianni Infantino has expressed full confidence in Mexico’s ability to host the 2026 World Cup safely despite a wave of deadly violence triggered by a high-profile military operation.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino remains “very reassured” about Mexico’s 2026 World Cup hosting duties following a violent cartel uprising.
The unrest, which left 74 dead, erupted after the killing of kingpin Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera.
Speaking in Colombia, Infantino dismissed security fears, stating: “Very reassured, everything’s good. It’s going to be spectacular.” Guadalajara, a key host city, was central to the recent clashes.
Despite FIFA’s optimism, the Portuguese Football Federation is reconsidering an upcoming friendly in Mexico City due to safety concerns.
However, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum insisted there is “no risk” to fans, noting the situation is “gradually returning to normal.”
While some domestic matches were suspended, Guadalajara is still scheduled to host four group-stage games and a critical playoff tournament next month.
