MLS issues lifetime bans to two players over betting violations

Major League Soccer has handed lifetime bans to former Columbus Crew teammates Yaw Yeboah and Derrick Jones for extensive betting on soccer matches, including instances involving their own team.

Major League Soccer has handed lifetime bans to Ghanaian international Yaw Yeboah and his former teammate Derrick Jones for “extensive gambling.”

The league’s investigation revealed that both players bet on matches during the 2024 and 2025 seasons.

Commissioner Don Garber stated the league “remains steadfast in its commitment to match integrity” after finding evidence that the players shared confidential information regarding planned yellow cards.

MLS determined that the pair bet on Jones receiving a yellow card during an October 2024 match, which he subsequently received.

While investigators found no evidence that these activities influenced match outcomes, the violations resulted in severe disciplinary action.

Neither player is currently under contract with an MLS team. Both had previously played for several clubs before their tenure with the Columbus Crew.
