Joey Barton charged with assault near a Golf Club

Former professional footballer Joey Barton and another man have been charged with section 18 wounding with intent following a serious assault near a golf club in Merseyside.

Former midfielder Joey Barton has been charged with an assault near a golf club. Merseyside Police confirmed the 43-year-old is accused of section 18 wounding with intent, alongside 50-year-old Gary O’Grady.

The charges follow an incident Sunday where a man suffered serious facial and bodily injuries near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club; the victim remains in a “serious but stable condition in hospital.”

The pair is scheduled to appear at Wirral Magistrates’ Court this Tuesday.

The legal development emerged during a separate High Court libel hearing, where Barton’s absence was explained after his counsel stated he “was arrested yesterday and is currently being held in custody.”

Barton, known for his playing career and recent podcast work, remains in police custody pending his scheduled court appearance today.
