President Donald Trump has advised the Iranian national football team to skip the 2026 World Cup for their own “life and safety” following the U.S.-led assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader.
President Donald Trump issued a stark warning on Truth Social Thursday, suggesting it is not “appropriate” for Iran to compete in the upcoming World Cup.
Despite previously assuring FIFA President Gianni Infantino that the team would be welcome, Trump’s latest comments highlight escalating tensions following U.S. and Israeli airstrikes that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
“I really don’t believe it is appropriate that they be there, for their own life and safety,” Trump wrote. Iranian officials have responded by signaling a likely boycott of the tournament, which is co-hosted by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.
Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali stated that because the U.S. “assassinated our leader,” the conditions required for participation no longer exist.
“Our boys are not safe, and conditions for participation do not exist,” Donyamali added. While Iran has not officially withdrawn, the geopolitical crisis has left FIFA officials scrambling to address the potential vacancy in the 48-team bracket.
