NFF fined as Nigeria awaits final FIFA verdict on DR Congo eligibility

FIFA has imposed financial penalties on Nigeria and DR Congo for disciplinary breaches during their 2026 World Cup qualifier while a separate eligibility protest remains undecided.

FIFA has sanctioned the football federations of Nigeria and DR Congo following disciplinary infractions during their November 2025 World Cup qualifier.

Nigeria received a 1,000 Swiss Franc fine after fans threw objects, violating security protocols. Meanwhile, DR Congo was fined 5,000 Swiss Francs for the use of laser pointers.

FIFA stated that disciplinary decisions are “based on the circumstances of each case and may still be subject to appeal.”

Despite the sanctions, Nigeria’s protest regarding the eligibility of certain Congolese players remains active.

The NFF argues that DR Congo’s domestic laws regarding dual citizenship could invalidate player clearances.

NFF General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi noted: “As far as FIFA is concerned, once you have the passport of your country, you are eligible. But our concern is that FIFA may have been deceived into clearing them.”
