Gaetano D’Agostino believes Mikel Arteta has forged a unique, pragmatic identity at Arsenal while claiming Pep Guardiola’s dominant cycle at Manchester City has officially reached its conclusion.
Former Italian midfielder Gaetano D’Agostino praised Arsenal’s patience with Mikel Arteta ahead of Sunday’s League Cup final, calling the Spaniard a “reincarnation of Guardiola” who developed his own pragmatic edge.
“He has realised that to win, you have to make sacrifices,” D’Agostino noted, highlighting Arsenal’s planning.
Conversely, he argued Manchester City’s tactical supremacy is fading, suggesting their recent Champions League struggles prove “Guardiola’s era at Manchester City is over.”
The commentator also criticized modern officiating and the lack of excitement in Italian football.
He argued that “VAR is useless as it stands: it’s subjective and takes the fun out of the game,” leading to fragmented matches.
Looking toward Italy’s World Cup play-offs, D’Agostino warned that the national team’s primary obstacle is not their physical opponents, but rather the overwhelming “fear” of another failure.
