Barcelona star Lamine Yamal condemned Islamophobic chanting during Spain’s draw with Egypt as local authorities launch a formal investigation into the hostile atmosphere at the RCDE Stadium.
Lamine Yamal has denounced the “intolerable” anti-Muslim chants that marred Spain’s international friendly against Egypt.
The 18-year-old winger, a practicing Muslim, took to social media to label the perpetrators “ignorant and racist people.”
While the chants were aimed at the visiting team, Yamal expressed deep personal distress. Local police have officially launched a probe into the “Islamophobic and xenophobic” behavior witnessed during the match.
Catalonia’s sports minister described the events as a “massive step backwards,” while Espanyol officials moved to distance their fanbase from the “isolated actions.”
FIFA is reportedly considering sanctions that could overshadow Spain’s upcoming 2026 World Cup campaign.
Amid the fallout, Yamal reaffirmed his faith, posting: “I am Muslim, Alhamdulillah,” and emphasized that such mockery has no place in football. The RFEF now faces significant pressure.
