Referee forced to abandon controversial match due to never-before-used rule

The 2002 “Battle of Bramall Lane” remains the only professional English match abandoned because a team fell below the seven-player minimum following three red cards and two late injuries.

English football history was made during a volatile 2002 clash between Sheffield United and West Bromwich Albion.

Following three dismissals and two injuries to the home side, referee Eddie Wolstenholme abandoned the game in the 82nd minute.

The official rule states “that a match should not continue if there are fewer than seven players in either team,” marking a unique occurrence in the professional game.

The match, famously dubbed the “Battle of Bramall Lane,” dissolved into chaos after substitute Georges Santos sought retribution for a previous injury.

While Sheffield United manager Neil Warnock faced accusations of gamesmanship, the Football League eventually awarded West Brom the victory.

Reflecting on the mayhem, Darren Moore noted, “it was a stupid, silly idea for the management staff to bring him on.”
