Phil Jagielka has condemned Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk for admitting the team surrendered during their 4-0 thrashing by Manchester City, labeling the comment “the worst thing he could have said.”
Former Everton defender Phil Jagielka has criticized Virgil van Dijk’s post-match honesty following Liverpool’s heavy FA Cup exit at the Etihad.
After the 4-0 defeat, Van Dijk admitted, “You shouldn’t give up and that’s maybe, at a certain point, what happened.”
Jagielka argued such remarks send a damaging message to fans, stating, “I think that’s the worst thing he could have said. He will be absolutely raging.”
Despite Jagielka’s disapproval, supporters have noted the captain’s visible deflation during a difficult campaign.
The former defender suggested Van Dijk failed to convey the necessary “hurt” expected of a club representative.
However, the Dutchman’s brutal transparency reflected the reality on the pitch, where Liverpool appeared to collapse after Erling Haaland’s hat-trick.
The squad now faces immense pressure to respond against Paris Saint-Germain.
