Mansfield District Council has launched a formal investigation into Councillor Martin Wright following allegations of sexist behavior directed at a local newspaper’s female sports reporter.
Mansfield District Council is investigating Reform party member Councillor Martin Wright after he posted disparaging Facebook comments about reporter Georgia Goulding’s football coverage.
Wright dismissed Goulding’s analysis, stating, “Best stick to netball Georgia, football is a step too far for you.”
Monitoring Officer Nancy Barnard confirmed the complaint is being taken “very seriously,” noting that investigations will follow the council’s formal corporate policies.
The controversy escalated when Wright defended his remarks against public criticism, claiming his view was “not sexist” while doubling down on his stance that the reporter lacked football knowledge.
Despite reader backlash labeling his views as “openly sexist,” Wright suggested Goulding should “best leave such things to John Lomas.”
The council has declined further comment while the active investigation into the Holly ward representative continues.
