Steve Clarke has stepped down as Scotland head coach following the team’s World Cup exit, bringing an end to a memorable seven-year reign.
The Scottish FA confirmed Clarke’s departure shortly after Croatia’s victory over Ghana officially ended Scotland’s hopes of reaching the knockout stages. Players were informed of the decision at the squad’s base in Charlotte.
The resignation comes as a surprise, with Clarke having signed a new four-year contract just a month ago. Scotland opened their campaign with a win over Haiti before suffering defeats to Morocco and Brazil, ultimately crashing out in the group stage.
In an emotional farewell, Clarke thanked his players and described it as an honour to be their manager.
Despite disappointing performances at major tournaments, Clarke will be remembered for restoring Scotland to the international stage. Under his leadership, Scotland qualified for two European Championships and their first World Cup since 1998.
Scottish FA chief executive Ian Maxwell praised Clarke’s contribution, saying he had exceeded expectations by transforming Scotland from a pot-four nation into World Cup qualifiers.
The search for Scotland’s next manager now begins.
