South Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo has called time on his tenure after the Taeguk Warriors flopped out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the group stage. Vanguard reports the former international announced his resignation on Sunday, shouldering full blame for the early exit.
South Korea started brightly with a win over the Czech Republic but back-to-back defeats against Mexico and South Africa ended their knockout hopes. Hong publicly apologised to fans, acknowledging he had failed to meet expectations despite the players’ commitment throughout the tournament.
He had taken charge in July 2024, succeeding Jürgen Klinsmann. The Korea Football Association is now expected to launch a search for his replacement ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
