The squad landed at Incheon International Airport around 4:00 a.m. on Tuesday, hoping to dodge backlash, but hundreds of furious fans were already waiting at arrivals, according to Peoples Gazette.

Footage reviewed by the outlet showed former head coach Hong Myung-bo and several players jeered as they walked through the terminal under heavy security. Hong resigned on Sunday following sharp criticism of his tactics from fans, local media and President Lee Jae Myung.

Captain Son Heung-min later apologised to supporters in an emotional Instagram statement over the team’s performance. South Korea, drawn against Mexico, South Africa and the Czech Republic, finished with just one win and two defeats, exiting in the first round.
