Lionel Messi has strengthened his position as the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer and moved back to the top of the Golden Boot standings with seven goals.

Lionel Messi has widened his lead as the World Cup’s all-time top scorer and returned to the summit of the Golden Boot race following Argentina’s progress in the tournament.
Messi now has 20 World Cup goals, extending his record as the competition’s most prolific scorer.
The Argentina captain also leads the race for the Golden Boot with seven goals, one ahead of France’s Kylian Mbappe, who has six. Norway striker Erling Haaland and England captain Harry Kane are next on five goals each.
The updated standings show Ousmane Dembele, Mikel Oyarzabal, Vinicius Junior and Ismaila Sarr all tied on four goals.
If Argentina reaches the World Cup final, Messi could have up to four more matches to add to his tally and continue his pursuit of further tournament records.
