Conspiracy theories claiming FIFA is favoring Argentina at the 2026 World Cup have intensified after controversial refereeing decisions in their win over Egypt, echoing similar accusations from past tournaments.
Argentina can’t catch a break from the doubters. After Tuesday’s chaotic last-16 win over Egypt — where a disallowed Egyptian goal and an allowed Argentine winner sparked fury — conspiracy talk has hit fever pitch, according to the Telegraph.
Add in Messi’s escaped red card, suspiciously few bookings, an all-Argentine officiating crew for France’s match, and a cushy group draw, and fans smell a rigged tournament.
It’s not new: similar claims followed Argentina in 1978, 1990, and 2022. FIFA president Gianni Infantino’s gushing comments about the team haven’t helped quiet the noise.
